Why do we have an extra celebration of Christmas in Australia? And why July? Due to the weather, South Australia is too hot in December to enjoy the traditional Christmas foods. The weather in July, although still warmer than Europe’s winter, is more suited to the traditional Christmas menu. The creation of Christmas in July is for some fun during the cold indoor winter months. 🎄
Why celebrate Christmas in winter?
Due to the very hot summers when Christmas is so hot and dry in Australia during December, we therefore came up with the idea of Christmas in July. Christmas in July is therefore celebrated with all the traditional Christmas foods you’d expect from Britain & Europe, like Christmas puddings, various warm soups, roasted turkey/lamb/duck/other meats, hot chocolates, coffee and other traditional treats. ☕️ We don’t open presents in the July version of Christmas, as it’s not the official holiday, and it’s just a made up one for winter cheer and fun. 🌧

In Australia’s boiling December heat which can be 41C, the Christmas menu is usually seafood & salads, lots to drink with light desserts such as pavlova, and Christmas Pudding made out of ice cream.
Why Christmas in July makes me happy during July
Like many people with or without Autism, I too, experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I look forward to Christmas in July which is our coldest, wettest, and darkest month because it cheers me up. Christmas in July provides an opportunity for my family to come together which I love. 👨👩👦❤️🎄🌧
