Christmas has arrived now, and the year is closing. As we welcome 2021, we can now reflect back on this year as we say goodbye to 2020. 😃 Christmas in Australia is never like your typical Christmas. For starters, it takes place in summertime due to the Southern Hemisphere, resulting in hot temperatures, and very sunny days, which make us Australians flock to the beaches and surf a lot. So why is it so hot?
Why is Christmas hot in Australia?
Because in December the Earth is tilted away in the Northern Hemisphere, we thus experience a green and yellow (oftentimes brown) Christmas. The browning off of the grass is caused by lack of rainfall which parches the ground in this dry climate. This explains why fire signs get so high during the summer months. The water around Australia (excluding Tasmania) is also warm which attracts various sharks, hence why I don’t go in the sea. The hot air from the northern tropics and the desert also sinks down into the lower states, bringing very dry and hot conditions, but sometimes we can get very humid weather. This also causes warm and hot nights.
As its so hot (up to 47C), we cannot build snowmen as it doesn’t snow in South Australia and never in our summer, so we use sand at the beach. People living in the tropics do this too!
As we start to celebrate Christmas and the upcoming New Year, hopefully 2021 will be a great year!
